With a deep understanding of the fundraising and operational needs of nonprofit organizations, you’ll assist in making a positive difference for organizations that you are passionate about.

You’ll learn about business management, public relations, relationship building, effective communication, and a well-rounded approach to raising much-needed funds for a variety of nonprofit organization types. Gain the skills you need to succeed in educational and religious, research and healthcare, and social services nonprofit organizations. There are also opportunities in government and political positions.

COURSES IN THIS SPECIALIZATION

This program consists of five lower-division online public and nonprofit management courses for a total of 15 credit hours.

  • SOC460 Community Development
    This course examines the various facets of community resource development and management. Emphasis is on planning and management strategies to guide organizations in community development projects, programs, and efforts. (This course is also offered through CBE. Credits earned using this option will appear on transcripts with an “EX” suffix.)
  • MKG380 Social Media Marketing
  • COM312 Public Relations Techniques
    This course introduces the basic principles associated with writing in a variety of styles and to multiple publics. Students learn how to construct specialized written documents such as backgrounders, biographies, pitch letters, and news releases. Students will also learn the features of effective design and what design options exist. Students will engage in a service project.
  • COM321 Campaign and Event Planning
    This course introduces the systematic process of researching, planning, conducting, and evaluating the major elements of both campaigns and events. The course focuses on establishing campaign and event goals, objectives, strategies, and tactics. Students will also analyze public relations campaigns locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • PMG370 Fundraising and Grant Writing
    This course provides a broad overview of theoretical and practical application of nonprofit management. Students will learn about the role and responsibilities of a nonprofit organization fundraising marketing and communication plan. An overview of fundraising will include; the importance of an analysis of the essential elements of fundraising: major gift solicitation, the annual campaign, planned giving, understanding alternative fundraising solutions, social enterprises, the use of new technologies for fundraising; individual donor tracking, institutional donors, charitable trusts and foundations and corporate philanthropy. Additionally, students will develop essential research skills, fundraising resources, professional associations and conferences, and examining and measuring the social impact and ethical aspects of fundraising.
